    What is Performance Testing?

Performance testing is the testing to assess the speed and effectiveness of the system and to make sure it is generating results within a specified time as in performance requirements.

  • It falls under the class of black box testing.
  • Performance testing often used interchangeably with ‘stress’ and ‘load’ testing.
  • It intends to determine how a system performs in terms of responsiveness and stability under a certain load.
  • It can compare two systems to find which performs better. Or it can measure what part of the system or workload causes the system to perform badly.
  • There are basically four kinds of performance testing:
  1. Load Testing is a type of performance testing conducted to evaluate the behavior of a system at increasing workload.
  2. Stress Testing a type of performance testing conducted to evaluate the behavior of a system at or beyond the limits of its anticipated workload.
  3. Endurance Testing is a type of performance testing conducted to evaluate the behavior of a system when a significant workload is given continuously.
  4. Spike Testing is a type of performance testing conducted to evaluate the behavior of a system when the load is suddenly and substantially increased.
